**Nagoya, Japan:** The 20th Asian Games will officially open on Saturday in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, bringing together 10,840 athletes from 46 countries for the continent’s major multi-sport event. The opening ceremony will begin at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya at 2.30 pm Indian time, corresponding to 6 pm local time.

Although competitions in cricket, basketball and football had already begun, the Asian Games will formally get underway with the opening ceremony on Saturday. Medal competitions will begin on Sunday, when 31 medal events are scheduled to be completed, including seven gold medal events in swimming.

For the next 14 days, attention across Asia will be focused on the twin cities of Aichi and Nagoya. Japan is hosting the Asian Games for the third time. The host region is also known for Nagoya Castle, associated with Japan’s samurai history, and for automobile manufacturer Toyota.

India has arrived in Japan with a large contingent comprising 499 athletes, 246 supporting staff and 19 officials. Olympic shooting medallist Manu Bhaker and two-time Asian champion shot putter Tejinder Pal Singh will lead the Indian contingent during Saturday’s opening ceremony.

Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav said India would enter the continental event with high expectations under two champion athletes from different generations. Manu Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics by winning two medals for the country.

The opening ceremony, being prepared by noted Japanese filmmaker Yukihiko Tsutsumi, will be followed by a march past featuring athletes from 45 countries. India’s contingent will march behind Manu Bhaker and Tejinder Pal Singh.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, the Indian flag was raised at the Games Village on Friday afternoon at Garden Pier, located near the container village arranged for athletes. The ceremony, however, began around an hour late due to what organisers described as an error.

According to the organisers, the delay in starting the flag-hoisting ceremony was caused by the late arrival of the chief guest. India’s Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav and deputies Sharath Kamal, Lijo David Thottan, Alakananda Ashok and Anjali Bhagwat attended the ceremony.

Indian Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha were also present to witness the flag-hoisting ceremony.
